Leslie House is an important Scottish landmark, formally a Palace within Fife. The restoration will provide residents with a lifestyle of estate living surrounded by its policies, including a south-facing terraced garden overlooking the River Leven.
Originally built as a courtyard palace for the Seventh Earl of Rothes, this renaissance mansion was built in 1667. In its time, it was considered a rival to Holyrood Palace in grandeur and size. The redevelopment of Leslie House will see it return once more as a fine, stately residence for its owners with the heart of Fife.
Approach by its own long wooded driveway, the development of the Leslie House estate is one of the most impressive residential developments in Scotland. The stunning apartments benefit from the proportions, light and ceiling heights associated with historic homes, all within the fabric of a newly built property. The landscaped grounds surrounding the property are for the private-use of the residents of the mansion and the six new courtyard houses and two gate houses.
Leslie House has a fascinating and significant past to the local area. Dating back to 1667, it was originally built as a courtyard palace for the Seventh Earl of Rothes, an avid supporter of the Stewart Monarchy.
The earl was a member of one Scotland’s most prominent families at the time. He was closely connected to the Stewarts and was asked to carry the sword of state at Charles II’s coronation.
He commissioned the house to be built in 1667. The architect was John Mylne, and he worked together with his nephew, Robert, and was advised by Sir William Bruce. Like the earl, Mylne also had strong connections to the Stewarts, and was Master Mason to the Crown of Scotland. He was also one of the last masters of Scottish Renaissance architecture, with his style mainly combining gothic and classical elements to create spectacular ‘Scots château’ manner country houses.
At that time, the house was known as the Villa De Rothes and was known to rival Holyrood Palace for size and grandeur. It became the centre of life at the village.
Throughout the centuries, many architects and historians have classed Leslie House as having extreme historical value, due to it’s well documented past.
Most notably, William Adam’s, a leading architects from the 18th Century, described it as one of Scotland’s most important restoration houses in ‘Vitruvius Scoticus’. Adams designed many famous country houses, such as Hopetoun House and Duff House, and the Vitruvius Scoticus is still referenced today by architects researching the classical style of Scottish architecture.
In more recent years, Leslie House also became known from a humanitarian point of view.
In 1912, the house was owned by Noel Leslie, Countess of Rothes. She was celebrated as one of the survivors of Titanic’s fateful journey and became famous for her heroism in helping third-class passengers board the lifeboats.
Just a few years later, Noel Leslie once again showed her kindness and sense of duty, when the First World War broke out. She converted a wing of Leslie House into a hospital for wounded soldiers from the front line and ensured they received the highest level of care.
Now, Leslie House has been restored to its former glory once more. Byzantian Developments have undertaken this project, to preserve the classical design and conserve the spirit of its history.
